TODAYS EPISODE IS BROUGHT TO YOU BY Empower Your Mind WINNER OF THE WEEK: Oldest US veteran of WWII celebrates his 112th birthday https://apnews.com/article/oldest-world-war-ii-veteran-lawrence-brooks-c52e4957963103a906ffcae5519d70b3 Suicide Prevention Stats Suicide is a Leading Cause of Death in the United States • According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) WISQARS Leading Causes of Death Reports, in 2019: o Suicide was the tenth leading cause of death overall in the United States, claiming the lives of over 47,500 people. o Suicide was the second leading cause of death among individuals between the ages of 10 and 34, and the fourth leading cause of death among individuals between the ages of 35 and 44. o There were nearly two and a half times as many suicides (47,511) in the United States as there were homicides (19,141). • In 2019, firearms were the most common method used in suicide deaths in the United States, accounting for a little over half of all suicide deaths (23,941). Symptoms Any of these could be potential warning signs for suicide: • Severe sadness or moodiness • Hopelessness • Sleep problems • Sudden calmness • Withdrawal • Changes in personality or appearance • Dangerous or self-harmful behavior • Recent trauma or life crisis • Making preparations • Threatening or talking about suicide What To Do How can I help someone who is feeling suicidal? It might help to: Remember that you don’t need to find an answer, or even to completely understand why they feel the way they do. Listening to what they have to say will at least let them know you care. If you are not sure that someone is feeling suicidal, ask: • “Are you thinking about suicide?” or • “Are you having thoughts of ending your life?” Reassurance, respect and support can help someone to recover from a difficult time. Talking about suicide can be a plea for help. How do I keep them safe? It is unlikely that you will be able to make their feelings go away, but you can help them What’s a crisis plan?
